2021 Ride Of Silence - Will Remain "Virtual" for 2021

Ride Of Silence

"Ride of Silence" is to honor accident victims and promote safe cycling

Each year, bicycle riders in the U.S. have been killed or injured while riding on public roadways. The Akron Bicycle Club invites all bicyclists to participate in a slow- paced bike ride in coordination with the  World Wide National Ride of Silence.

The Akron Bicycle Club (ABC) invites all bicyclists to participate in a slow- paced bike ride on Wednesday, May 19, 2021 in coordination with the World Wide National Ride of Silence (www.rideofsilence.org).  Due to restrictions in place by the Summit County Board of Health and local law enforcement, the 2021 Ride Of Silence will remain "virtual" and we will repeat the process used in 2020. The ABC event will especially honor two of the club’s cyclists, Matt Billings and Jim Lambert, who were both killed in an automobile/bicycle crash in September of 2015.

As an international event, the Ride of Silence has taken place in various locations across the globe since 2003. The ride is intentionally solemn and slow paced. In keeping with the importance of the occasion, other area cycling groups are also welcome to participate.

Due to the current coronavirus situation,
the format will be changing from an organized club ride to a "solo" ride, or group ride with riders you are comfortable with (trainer rides are also an option). Rides can start and end at the location of your choice.

  1. Ride in silence
  2. Remember and honor those who've been hit & killed while riding or seriously injured
  3. Ride slowly (12 MPH Max) and a relatively short distance - this is not a race
  4. Wear a helmet & obey road laws for bicyclists
  • The intent is for everyone to begin their rides on Wednesday, May 19 at 7:00 pm, as originally scheduled. If that time does not work out, rides can be done anytime on 5/19. (5/20 will be the rain date)

In consideration of the change in format this year, ABC is adding TWO components to make this ride more inclusive for all:

  1. In lieu of our group physically getting together pre-ride, a short video with Ride Of Silence information is being provided. Click on the "Ride Of Silence Video" Button below to watch prior to your ride
(please note the 2021 Date is 5/19/21)

  2. As a way to document ROS rides for ABC, we will be tabulating data from individual rides and providing it to the National ROS group. We are asking if you could please email the following information to Bob Pike @ rapiker1@yahoo.com after your ride:
  • Your Name
  • # Miles Ridden
  • Description of Ride (location, destination, etc)
  • Tribute/In memory of (if applicable)

Other ideas are to take a selfie photo or 2 and use the hashtag #RideofSilence2020 and location of the event when posting their rides on social media.  Posting to the National ROS Facebook page is especially encouraged:  https://www.facebook.com/rideofsilence/
